3D-printed in Finland by Icewood Atelier, this tool is the perfect helper for finishing the bases of cups and bowls. It presses a clean, raised foot ring into the clay, giving your pottery a professional look and making glazing a breeze—you only need to wipe the foot-ring area free of glaze before firing.
How to Use the Foot Ring Tool
- Support the piece firmly. This is the most important step. The tool works like a stamp: it displaces and compresses the clay, so the base needs something solid underneath. Place the piece upside down on a sturdy support that fills the inside, such as a jar, a block of wood or a foam cone. Without support, the base will just sink in.
- Clay thickness: Leave enough clay in the base. For slab work, at least 8 mm.
- Press patiently: Press down on every part of the tool in turn until the imprint is an even depth all around. Don't thin the base too much.
- Release by twisting: Rotate the tool gently before lifting it off. Cornstarch, plastic wrap or a very thin cloth between the clay and the tool prevents sticking.
- Clean up: Smooth the edges with a damp sponge or fingertip. The tool does the heavy lifting; the finishing touches are up to you.
Good to Know
- Sizing: The size shown for each option (e.g. 35mm) is the approximate diameter of the foot ring the tool presses into the clay — not the tool's own outer dimensions. Actual results can vary slightly depending on clay softness and pressure used.
