This gives you the most control over the final form – you can press the clay exactly into shape and position it just the way you want. While the clay sits in the mold, you can also decorate the inside surface (unless you’ve already textured the slab with a pattern roller) or add details such as handles. Negative molds work well even with soft, quite moist clay, and because the clay shrinks away from the walls as it dries, it can stay in the mold through the whole drying process without cracking. Use a slab that has firmed up a little – we don’t recommend drape molds for very moist clay, as soft clay doesn’t hold its shape over the form. Clay shrinks onto a drape mold, so lift the piece off at the latest when it is leather-hard.
